The Challenge
Greenfield Energy operates over 200 solar and wind installations across the western United States, but their legacy SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems were aging, siloed by site, and incapable of providing the centralized visibility needed to manage a rapidly growing portfolio. Each site ran its own monitoring software with no cross-site analytics, making it impossible to benchmark performance or identify underperforming assets at scale.
Response times to equipment faults averaged 4-6 hours because alarms were only visible to on-site operators, and after-hours incidents often went unnoticed until the next shift change. With aggressive expansion plans to double their portfolio within two years, Greenfield needed a modern, cloud-connected SCADA platform that could scale with their growth while improving operational efficiency and energy output.
Our Solution
Cloud Quest built a cloud-connected SCADA modernization platform that provided centralized monitoring and control for all 200+ installations from a single operations center. We implemented secure edge gateways at each site that collected data from existing PLCs and inverters via standard industrial protocols (Modbus, DNP3, OPC-UA) and transmitted it to the cloud platform over encrypted connections.
The cloud platform processed millions of data points per minute, providing real-time dashboards showing power output, equipment status, weather conditions, and performance metrics for every installation. An automated alerting system with intelligent escalation ensured that critical faults were detected and routed to the appropriate response team within seconds, regardless of time of day.
We built a portfolio analytics engine that benchmarked performance across sites, accounting for weather, panel age, and installation configuration, to identify underperforming assets that needed maintenance or reconfiguration. A mobile app enabled field technicians to receive work orders, access site documentation, and update equipment status directly from the field.
Key Results
All 200+ solar and wind installations now monitored from a centralized operations center with real-time visibility into every asset.
Portfolio-wide energy output increased by 18% through early fault detection, performance benchmarking, and optimized maintenance scheduling.
Critical fault detection and alert delivery reduced from 4-6 hours to under 5 seconds, with automated escalation to on-call teams.
Remote diagnostics and monitoring reduced unnecessary site visits by 60%, saving significant travel time and costs across the distributed portfolio.
Technologies Used
"Cloud Quest modernized our operations in a way that scales with our growth. We went from managing each site in isolation to running our entire portfolio from one screen, and the performance improvements have directly increased our energy output and revenue."
